I've been toying with the idea of someone unbirthing a person long enough to form an umbilical cord and then letting them out without severing the cord in order to serve as a living iron lung or the like.

They can go back in if they like but they aren't forced to be confined if they don't want to be.

I figured the carer would be able to give at least enough length for like a nurse to be seated comfortably beside the bed of a patient she's connected to and still have some slack.
