Advice on writing

Postby BlueRaymond » Sat Jul 09, 2022 3:14 am

I have been writing for a little bit but lately I think I'm starting to notice I am moving onto a rut when it comes to writing.
I tried to change things up but not too sure what to do. Any advice?

Examples of works, comments are welcomed.

If your story is smut, then I suggest you think "How can I make this sexy while moving the plot forward?" Anything can be turned kinky, a simple shower scene could turn into group sex if you play your cards right.

I use this a lot in my story, "A College Student's Fame". (non-vore)

For my latest example, my character visits the library on their military base. Looking for a book seems really boring, but it's vital for the plot and ... perhaps the book is magical and has special incantations that transform my character? Perhaps the book makes a nerdy character who likes reading attracted to your character, initiating sex later on?

I understand that after writing your outline for several days, creativity runs thin. Take a break, talk with some people, and perhaps later on you'll think of the appropriate direction for your story.

If you're struggling to come up with unique ideas, I would browse kinky art on this platform or other platforms for some inspiration! I'd also consider thinking more about how more unrealistic cartoon logic and magic could lead to some interesting results, and along that same line, consider some more out-there predators and prey - think about using monsters like lamia or dragons as predators, or even magical plants! You can also do a lot of stuff with different objects being used as the predator - I'm personally quite a fan of flushing my prey down the toilet~

If you're struggling more with making your writing flow well and read well, I've personally found that changing the words I use to describe common elements in my stories helps a lot! There's a lot of different words you can use instead of "mouth" for example - maw, jaws, muzzle, trap, any synonym for entrance, abyss, orifice, chasm, etc.

Hope that helps to some extent!

Might be a bit dated, and probably ought to lurk through literotica for their own guides as well.

But on Beast's Lair, may not be perfect, and under a fanfic lens/site. But I got something of a 'guide' to writing erotica from Elf here;

Past that, or books to 'good writing style', or 'how to craft a plot'. By far the rule zero of writing is just that; to write. No matter how grand or trash your writing is, practice makes perfect. Or leads to a style of sorts in due time.

Just took a quick look at your latest work, there's a few things I saw that I think could help. For more general improvements, I'd suggest watching youtube videos on the Craft of writing. Those usually give me inspiration, or at least help drive home advice I've heard before. I'd recommend looking up videos for scene structure, description, and what drives a story forward.

Back to your stuff...
1) Formatting. You aren't using spaces between your paragraphs, which makes it harder to read because it looks like wall of text. It's really easy to fix, but it'll go a long way toward making your stories more digestible ( ) for the reader.

2) Most of your paragraphs/sentences are action beats. You have a good mix of dialogue in there, but if you don't also use descriptions and character introspection then the action comes too fast and reads more like "Telling" because the Reader and characters aren't given enough time to react.

3) Look up erotica writing guides like LemonBarb suggested since that's a big focus of your work, and also think about how to use standard scene structure to escalate sexual tension throughout your sex scenes.

It may sound silly but, reading is always best. You're influenced by what you read and take in what you ingest. Basically you are what you eat. Or you are what you read.

Read some of your fav authors, see what they're doing, and take notes.

Thank you all for your advice!
I actually had a story in mind but I think I'll take some time to flesh it out more with what you guys suggested!

The more you read, the better your writing will be. Be sure to constantly search this web site and other kink web sites such as furaffinity, deviantart, and writing.com to read others' kink stories and get lots of fun ideas.
