appeared on the screen, and another period was added every 3 seconds exactly. After a few minutes, it began listing the names of the tools as it found them. Not the most convenient way to explain, but Whitebrand could probably ask for elaboration after it was finished with the current task. Many of them sounded very useful for repair work, though a few of them were strange measurement devices that neither he nor Celia knew how to set up or read.

The clothes, by the device's reckoning, were made of a material that was resistant to cuts, penetration, acid, fire, and electricity. It said "resistant", not "invulnerable" but even so it sounded incredible.

The odd clothes were the best find by far, rand thought. Of course he wouldn’t need them himself, he was sure. He simply absorbed electricity and was durable enough that most other things couldn’t really hurt him (or so he believed). But Celia would likely benefit enormously from these. He glanced at her and decided to let her eat more before he gifted her with the tools and clothing. Meanwhile he took a short rest himself.

As the two of them rested, others' plans progressed. Whitebrand had been preoccupied on his walk back, so perhaps it wasn't unusual that despite his route giving him a clear look into the starting room, it hadn't registered that the liquid-filled pod from earlier now had something more substantial growing inside it...

Brand roused himself a few hours later, to the strange sound of the pod activating. He sat up almost immediately, staring at the strange pod. He immediately ran a magical scan on it, analyzing the status of the contents and narrowing his eyes dangerously.

The content of the pod was something few had ever seen: an unborn kobold, without a solid eggshell obstructing the view.

Or perhaps not quite. It had all of the features one would expect a kobold to have, but there were a few slight differences compared to the breeds he knew. It was as if someone had a good idea what they were supposed to look like, but had to make one from scratch without an actual visual reference.

Ah, and she had his scale coloration.

Brand stared at the creature.

“You’re no Kobold,” Brand said as he stared. He took out the tablet.

“What is this?” He said. “In the pod? Why does its scales match mine?”

Information from your blood was used to fill in gaps in "Reptilian humanoid" profiles, including Kobolds.

Trade-offs between power usage and subject strength and effectiveness were calculated and it was determined,

that designing a kobold and imbuing it with competence in several fields would take significantly less energy than a human with similar specifications.

This course of actions was started before your last supply run.

Well, that explained why they would soon have a little engineer who wouldn't be able to use the protective clothing he'd just found.

Brand had to concede that Kobolds could be clever little buggers...and obnoxious as hell. He had to hope that their natural inclination to sadism wasn’t part of this ones “program”.

And how useful would the creature be if it couldn’t use the clothing?

Brand slowly facepalmed with a definite feeling of trepidation coming on him. Okay. He had to hope this strange wizard knew what it was doing.

“How long?” He asked. “Before she emerges?”

“All right then,” Brand said. “Give me a notification five minutes before it wakes. I’m going to scout a bit more.”

He left the tools and suits where they could be easily found by the girl and resumed his explorations. As he came to know the local corridors he became more confident. He started exploring nearby rooms, trying to figure out function as best he could.

Of the rooms that could be opened easily, there were a few more bedrooms, a miniature garden setup with unknown devices bolted in nearby, storage rooms containing lockers (locked or empty, of course), a room containing metal cylinders set into the wall with clear coverings and what had to be clothing (simple jumpsuits alongside similar outfits to what he'd found in the maintenance tunnels, though lacking it's protective qualities), a room containing odd trays filled with a clear gel... and the same mechanisms as the garden.

In its way, this was starting to feel like a place someone could actually live in if they had to. If it wasn't for the unnerving emergency lighting outside a certain being's sphere of influence...

Also, Whitebrand had been going a bit too long without sleep...

Brand returned to “home base” and settled himself down next to the girl. He was tired. He knew that would mean that they were vulnerable...but he had to recover. He draped a possessive arm over the girl and let his eyes close. He got was much easier to drift off with a girl in his arms...

(My apologies for letting this slip. Perhaps I should try a simpler scenario next time.)

When Brand woke up next, he would notice a silver-scaled kobold examining the implements that had been collected so far. There were signs of a family resemblance to him... and she didn't seem hostile.

Brand awoke with a startled snort. He blinked and stared at the kobold female until his memory became unclouded. Then he remembered.

"Welcome to the world," Brand said to the creature. "Such as it is. Do you have a name?"
