The sleep of night brings time for the body and mind to absorb the day's experiences. Remania mostly ran away from things today. Unfortunately the elven body does not have much room to grow even more dextrous than it already is by nature. A seed of assertiveness was planted in her voice when she tried standing up for someone however. A seed that blooms overnight into a mote of charisma.

Her skills have mostly gone unused. Her bow arm was only ever used to threathen. Not to lash out. Perhaps later days of note will bring more oppurtunity.

The light of dawn awakens Remania and solidifies the self-improvement that came in sleep. In addition her emotions have calmed and regained their focus. Perhaps now she can make use of them somewhat more reliably

Name:Remania crystalsinger
Current emotional state: Inquisitive: bonus to investigation. Penalty to careful action
Attributes
  • Strength:Somewhat weak
  • Dexterity: Naturally graceful
  • Constitution: Somewhat fragile
  • Intelligence: Quite quick-witted
  • Wisdom: Reasonably astute
  • Charisma: Occasionally assertive and Charming
Skills
  • Crystal singing: A rare elven skill allowing an artisan to shape a magical crystal seed into whatever shape they desire with their carefully cultivated singing voice. These crystal tools and weapons only temporarily keep their form before reverting to a seed form. Many great elven artifacts were made by crystal singers. The temporary nature of their shape means a master of the craft is required to make any real use of them.

Remania is currently a journeyman singer and can consistently sing the shapes of tools and simple weapons. She still requires a room with carefully built acoustics for anything more advanced than that.
  • Survival: The skill of navigating the wilderness and foraging for food. Remania currently has basic training surviving in the woods and no other biomes
  • Bow proficiency: The skill of using and maintaining bows. Remania is currently proficient only with hunting bows. Lacking the draw strength for anything more powerful
Equipment
  • Traveling clothes: Rugged, well-crafted clothes that protect the wearer from rough enviroments and bad weather. Does little to protect one from bodily harm in a fight however.
  • Hunting bow (10/10 arrows quivered) A hunting bow with a quiver of appropriately sized arrows. Easy to use and sufficient to kill small animals. Unlikely to be much help against larger creatures and armoured targets however.
  • Low-grade crystal seed: A seed that can be shaped into a variety of forms by a crystal singer. Impurities in the original crystal and flaws in its craftsmanship cause it to be able to hold a form for an hour at most before reverting. The first seed Remania carved with her own hands
Traits
  • Elven senses: Remania's senses are stronger than average. Her eyes can see in all but absolute darkness and her ears can hear about twice as far as the human average
  • Unaging: Elves are creatures of old magic. They are immune to biological aging but can still die to injury or disease
  • Creature of emotion: Elves are highly emotional creatures. Effects based off of emotion. Both positive and negative, affect elves twice as heavily as normal. Similarly, an elf's emotional state has a direct effect on their abilities

Remania hasn't currently awakened any pred or prey instincts within herself. This section is reserved for when she does

Remania Didn't know quite when she had fallen asleep. She awoke Wrapped in Karst's fuzzy and firm embrace. Her sleep had been dreamless. About the best she could ask for given all she'd been through. She stirred slightly. Causing Karst to loosen his grip. She shuddered as she felt something else relinquish its grip between her legs. It caused particularly pleasant memories to rush back in. Of carnal satisfaction found in the quiet hours of the night.

She looked around and saw someone had snuck in a tub of water and her clothes. Freshly washed. She quickly freshened up and got Dressed. Just in time to hear Karst awaken with a drawn out growl. The gnoll smiled at her. "I can tell from the spring in your step you really needed last night." He spoke. Still rubbing the sleep out of his eyes. "Surprising you had such intensity in that tired body of yours. You took me like a thirsty cougar." Remania blushed at the candid and evocative description of their time together. "I suppose I did need some warmth and compassion." She spoke idly.

She considered her next move. Now that she had herself somewhat back in order she could get to work figuring out what had become of her neighbours and family. She still remembered the sign of the raiders. A burning, two-headed axe. There was a trading post on the village outskirts. Perhaps the merchants of the land could be of help. They usually didn't do things without monetary encouragement though. And she didn't have a red cent to her name right now.

Perhaps she could return to the remains of her village to look for clues herself. There was some doubt in her mind as to how smart such a move would be. The raiders could still be around. Ready to gladly clasp her in chains.

Remania had decided to play it safe for now. Better to find out at a distance than charge pointlessly into danger. The trading post was quite easy to find simply by beng the only place in the village outskirts where there were creatures other than gnolls.

Today, there were three merchants present.

The first was a dwarf, selling various pieces metalwork of pointedly inferior quality. Dwarves were notoriously protective of their truly masterful craftsmanship, exporting mostly the output of fumbles and apprenticeships. Still, tools and weapons that looked rough and blunt on the surface sometimes hid a masterwork underneath. Often enough that buying from dwarves was considered a gamble with potentially great returns

The second was a creature of the deeper forest. A nymp selling life-infused fruits for eclectic currencies. Stories she hadn't heard before. Memories of particularly interesting events. Remania had been thought often to be careful in dealing with such creatures. They acted adjacantly to intelligent creatures, but often were motivated by distinctly strange and oftentimes dangerous whims and desires

The last merchant was somewhat of a rarity in these parts. A draconian. Robed in shabby vestments that might have once been of an important order. Their yellow scales marked them as an adept of arcane magic. That much Remania knew of the reclusive creatures. But what gender or age they might be was a mystery to her. They were selling a variety of magical curiosities. Eagerly demonstrating them and bartering them away for simple goods like food, lumber and furs. The draconic enclaves were frequently under siege or otherwise harassed by humans. Remania felt a variety of emotions seeing the draconian. Her friends and family had many different opinions on dragonkind. How they had dragged the elves with them in their fall. How elves should have stood with them... She shook her head. She wasn't even born when those things happened.

She considered why she was here. The market was quite busy. It would be unlikely she could find the moment to talk to more than one of the visitors. She was still here to learn about the dwarves bearing the sign of a flaming axe.

She approached the draconian. Their kind had strong memories. And unlike the dwarven merchant they were unlikely to be biased if they knew anything.

He was just trading a bloodseeking throwing axe for an ox. The beast could help bring his haul back home and then serve as more food for the draconian's kin. The gnoll gleefully took the weapon with her. Remania briefly wondered about the wisdom in trading such powerful objects with creatures as impulsive as gnolls. Still, she was a welcome visitor. So any additions to their town's ability to defend itself could only mean good things for now.

The draconian bobbed its head to Remania. "Good day. Can I help you?" He spoke calmly. "Yeah, I wanted to ask something." Remania responded. The draconian seemed friendly enough. "My village was raided by a dwarven warband. Their symbol was a flaming axe."

The draconian sighed. "I know of that warband. Gugnir's flames they call themselves. Ruthless mercenaries that frequently resort to violence when they think there's treasure to be had..." The draconian looked her over. "Your village. Did it have any particular treasures?"

Remania nodded. "They looted our libraries and reliquaries and... As far as I know they enslaved everyone but me." The draconian shook his head. "Another blow to the old world... I take it you sought shelter amongst the beastfolk of this village? You elves seem to get along well with them." Remania shuddered slightly. Recalling her confrontation yesterday evening. She should see about helping out the guard that had stood up for her when she could.

"I doubt these gnolls will be able to help you against gugnir's flames. They've got a lot of zeal and power. But not much in the way of discipline." The draconian slapped a curious gnoll's hand away from a wand on his stall. "No touching without asking. That's a thunder wand. You could set the market on fire like that" He spoke admonishingly to the whining gnoll.

He turned back to Remania. "As I was saying. How about you ride along with me? I can bring you to the mountainhold close to my home. The dwarven clans quite dislike gugnir's flames. Perhaps your story will be enough to get them to finally scatter those glorified bandits like they should have some time ago?"

___
Rolls summarized:
Guage the draconian's disposition. Remania is unfamiliar with their kind. But her current mood supports her inquisitive observation. Difficulty of 55. Result kept hidden for dramatic tension

Remania nodded at the draconian. He made a good point. Dwarves were notorious for wanting to take care of their own problems. No telling what might happen if she attacked the mercenaries without permission from their mountainhold. "Alright. I'll go with you." She motioned one of the locals over. "Tell Karst I'm going off into the mountains with this draconian." The gnoll nodded and continued onwards into the crowd. Eager to explore more of the marketplace. Remania shrugged. She was quite sure the gnoll would remember mentioning it sooner rather than later. She nodded to the draconian. "We're off then?"

The draconian shook his head. "No. I have to sell off the rest of my wares first. Mind putting that elven smile of yours to some good use? Dragging you along up those mountains won't come for free." Remania nodded. That seemed fair. She moved behind the stall to see if her presence helped in any way.

Unfortunately. It was mostly females that were out right now. Whenever a male caught sight of Remania a female would jealously hog them to herself. The rest of the market day passed with frustration. The draconian was left having sold nothing else. He looked at Remania and shrugged. "Well... You tried. Thanks for the effort. Perhaps one day the females here will respect you too." Remania shuddered and thought back on her confrontation yesterday evening again. "Let's hope I do. Preferably before they eat someone indebted to me."

The draconian cocked his head as he started packing up his stall. "That sounds like quite a bizarre story. Mind telling it to me on the road?" Remania nodded as she helped the old draconian pack up. Remania sighed. "Not so much bizarre as just someone else suffering for my mistakes." She felt like she could tell the draconian the story. By the time she had gotten to the part about the potato salad they were making their way well out of town. At the end of it the draconian looked at her sympathetically. "Reminds me of how I look upon my master... I wouldn't hesitate to sacrifice myself like that guard did for you." Remania looked at him in mild annoyance. It felt like he was missing the point of why she cared so much. Or else he had only partially been listening. "Yes but... I'd like to get him out of that situation."

The draconian looked away from her. "You think you can get strong enough in time to pull that off? Gnolls have terribly short memories. She'll forget why she's keeping him around before too long." Remania cocked her head. "I Think they deserve more credit than that sir." The draconian laughed dismissively. "I suppose an elf like you would try and see the best in those creatures." Remania frowned. There was a nasty undertone in the draconian's voice she didn't like. Perhaps he was sore he hadn't sold anything else after she had approached him? "I'm sure you'll sell your treasures for much more to the dwarves anyway. They're discerning enough you can afford to ask for their true value."

The draconian looked at her. "You could tell I was underselling them?" He sounded somewhat less confident. "Yes... Things are not going well for your home are they?" The draconian silently looked away from her. Some time later as they were in the middle of the forest he spoke again. "It's none of your business... How about to make up for your bad performance selling my stuff you find us a place to safely spend the night." Remania grinned at him and pointed past his head. "That would be right over there." She was pointing to a peculiar tree. "Dryadhome. She knows my village. She'll keep us safe as long as I'm with you." The draconian nodded silently and manouvered his oxen towards the tree. An ethereal feeling entered the air around them as soon as they were close. "So... What's the rules here? No campfires or something?" Remania giggled. "Ah... You're really not at home here are you? Feel free to make a modest campfire. Less undergrowth to deal with when there's another bush fire. They're supposed to happen every now and again. But that doesn't mean they should burn uncontrolled."

The draconian nodded. "Alright... I'll be getting us some firewood then. You impress upon our host that I'd rather not be invaded in my dreams tonight or any of that weird fairy stuff that happens down here." Remania giggled again. She saw it now. The draconian was on edge because he was unfamiliar here. She nodded to the Dryad looking at them both from the branches. She gave a silent thumbs-up showing her she would just ward the dragonkin tonight.

Remania used her time alone to consider how she would carry herself to the draconian for the rest of the journey. She had told him some information. Some of itquite important. Some more of it rather personal.

The draconian returned soon after Remania had made up her mind. He was carrying quite an impressive collection of dry wood. "I thought it was a dry season." The elf commented upon seeing the bundle. The draconian put the bundle down on the ground. "Some simple fire magic. Enough to dry the whole bundle out by the time I'm here." Remania could feel the gentle heat coming from the firewood. So this draconian was a practicioner and not just a trader of magic.

Remania got to work assembling a fire pit. The draconian took the moment to take a breather. "Say. You took me along for a trip. But you've yet to even tell me your name. I'm Remania." The draconian looked at her with a strange look. Somewhere between surprise and annoyance. "My name's Aether." He finally responded. He looked at Remania's technique. "Don't bother with tinder. I'm lighting it up with a fireball." The elf looked at him with a hint of worry. He seemed rather overly judicious in his use of magic. Nevertheless. She stepped back to let the draconian do his thing. He was almost casual in summoning a mote of elemental fire and shaping it into an explosive orb. "You've been doing this for a long time haven't you?" Remania asked. The draconian wasn't disrupted in the slightest by her distraction. He lobbed the ball into the fire pit. It combusted with a wave of heat that made Remania flinch. It seemed excessive...

"I'm quite old... We draconians can live for thousands of years. Not truly immortal like our masters or your ken though." His voice still had a hint of annoyance. He seemed tired. "Shall we sleep now? I've little tolerance for idle chatter." Remania nodded. It had been quite a long day for the draconian. Dealing with a gnoll market and packing up quite a lot of baggage. The draconian rolled out a bedroll for himself. He looked at Remania. "Hmm... Where's your bedroll... Don't tell me you don't have one." Remania sheepishly shook her head. "Right... Not my problem. You can sleep on the ground." He lied down and turned away from her.

Remania sighed and found a soft spot of undergrowth to lie herself down in. Aether was quite a rude bastard. But he was also her best chance at getting up into the mountains. Although... The oxen before the cart seemed calm enough. And Aether could presumably catch up easily enough. Remania felt offended enough by the draconian to seriously consider ditching him and continueing onwards on her own. It wouldn't be that hard to find a dwarven mountainhold on her own. The mountain men liked to build highly visible and ostentatious works of masonry in their domains.

When she spotted a spare bedroll lying in Aether's belongings. Remania made up her mind. She soothingly went to the oxen with her meagre belongings on her back. Her pace was slow and deliberate. She didn't want to wake up the draconian. Her deliberate patience was rewarded. The oxen quietly followed her directions away from the campsite. Pretty soon. She was a good distance away. Far enough she dared climb onto the car and whip the oxen into a faster pace. Pretty soon. She was back on the road and going towards the mountains. Her youth helped her here. She didn't find it too difficult to stay awake.

Some time later. Remania was sure it couldn't have been more than two hours. She heard rustling behind her. Her hair stood on end and a shiver went down her spine. Then the world exploded into light and pain. She faintly heard a thunderclap as her body fell shocked and paralyzed to the ground. Footsteps were approaching. A silhouette stood over her. It was Zephyr. Breathing heavily and angrily. "I knew you'd betray me... Like you did a hundred years ago. Your kind are nothing but oppurtunistic traitors." The draconian picked her up and threw her into the cart. "I was waiting for an excuse... You creatures... At least you make good snacks."

Remania's eyes went wide. Was that why he had given her a lift despite his hatred for her? Had he planned this from the start? Her body recovered slowly over the ride back to the campsite. The draconian picked her up again and threw her next to the fire. His claws went for her. Stripping her clothes. A coarse coil of hemp rope was wrapped around her hands and feet to keep her from running. The draconian loomed over her. "Hmm... What do you have to say for yourself. Anything to offer me for your life?"

Equipment

"I can work! Pull my weight! Just... Don't kill me." The draconian looked at Remania with Disdain. His eyes narrowed. He seemed to be staring right into her soul. The uncomfortable silence remained for a while longer before he spoke up. "A magical contract. For the emotional damages your waylaying and trickery caused me... And for your attempted theft." Remania was shocked that had worked... Had he seen a glimpse of her better parts? Or perhaps the old lizard simply wanted to bask in the feeling of having an elven servant.

The draconian moved from sight for a while. Remania could faintly hear the scritching of a pen on parchment. She saw the draconian returning with a frightfully sharply nibbed quill. "I'm going to loosen your arms now. I expect you to sign the contract immediately." Remania looked at his hands. Not seeing an inkwell amongst what he was carrying. "In blood naturally. It's the quickest way of making it binding." He loosened the bonds and pushed the quill into her grasp impatiently.

Remania fearfully locked eyes with the draconian. After a moment of indecision. She grasped the quill. She took a deep breath and jabbed the nib into her finger. She could feel a sensation like a suction as the quill filled itself with her blood.

She considered for a moment the contract. A quick glance to see what she was being forced into. When she heard a growl she quickly signed her name. Having only read a declaration of total loyalty to the contract holder. She could feel a sense of dread as she scrawled on her name. The contract ripped itself from her grasp and into the draconian's pocket.

The draconian nodded. "Right then... Your first task is to go through the cart and see if anything broke from your dumb stunt." Remania snapped upright. The command was irresistible the moment her mind had processed it. She shivered... What had she gotten herself into? "Can... Can I read the contract next time I get a break?" The draconian grinned and nodded. "You can read it when I grant you a break." Remania nodded demurely. Something told her whatever breaks she was going to get would be spent resting rather than preparing for her freedom.

The next few days proceeded in a painful pattern. Remania was woken early and tasked with an unpleasant and tiring task. She was given just enough food to subsist at midday. And if she finished early the scaly bastard thought up some other contrived task for her. It had been a good call to do no more than the minimum to avoid punishment. It gave Remania just enough strength to consider possibilities of freedom before sleeping.

Her first order of business should probably be the contract. If she knew what she had agreed to she might be able to find a loophole. The draconian claimed he would only allow her to read it while he was present. And he only ever gave her free time moments before going to bed. She sighed and laid down on the straw bed of the dwarven inn's stables they were staying at. She had to sleep with the oxen. Perhaps she could try escaping somehow. The mountains were vast and she was quite dextrous. She might be able to feign falling to her death. A darker impulse also ran through her. The consideration of a plan to end the draconian. Not many magi were strong enough to cast spells that extended beyond their own life.

A check of constitution for how well Remania holds up to hard labour. Result of 62. A narrow success given the weaker elven constitution

She dedicated herself to getting her hands on the contract. She considered the upcoming few days. Aether was quite surprisingly softened by drink. Something she had experienced to her benefit when he had turned to a sealed bottle of wine on a particularly troublesome day of travel. They were currently at a dwarven inn... And it was custom to serve all foods with fortified drinks. A custom that might allow her to sway the draconian to her purposes. With some luck. He might even forget the request altogether after the fact.

She rose from her bed of straw and brushed off. Aether had only given her rags to dress herself. Another layer of the daily humilliations he put upon her. Hopefully she would be allowed in the inn proper like this. She made her way out of the stables. Patting the oxen sympathetically. Aether did not spare the lash driving the animals forward. She left the stables and walked up to the inn proper. A grand dining hall carved into the side of a mountain pass. A dwarf sat at the door. He looked at her with disdain. "What'cha want. Slave rat?" Remania breathed in. She would have to talk or bargian her way past. "Sir... My master's oxen are making an uproar. I'm not sure how much force I'm allowed to use. Please let me in so I can ask him."

The dwarven doorman was as unsymphatethic to her as she was to being given the thankless duty of keeping watch out in the cold away from the revels he could constantly hear from inside. "I'll go fetch him. You stay out here." Remania shook her head. Making a nuisance out of herself would not work. "Sir. Please... For all you know he's in a drinking contest." The dwarf turned to her. "I don't care lass.

Remania shuddered. If Aether saw she had taken him away from his dinner there would no doubt be a punishment to endure. Maybe she could bully the oxen into causing trouble but... The gentle beasts were her sole companions right now.

She shook her head. This plan had gone awry. She would simply have to endure the consequences. The friendliness of the oxen was not something she was willing to give up.

Aether came out soon with the doorman in town some moments later. The draconian looked casually annoyed. "What is it elf? Did you try sucking off one of the oxen?" Remania kept silent. Somewhat taken aback by the rather absurd accusation. Aether barged into the stables. He looked around briefly before turning to Remania. "So... Where's the rampaging oxen? I don't see anything." He said in a cold tone.

Remania decided she might as well lie. "I was cold... I just wanted to...Get inside for a short bit." Aether shook his head as he approached. He retrieved something from the tool rack. A riding whip!. "Obviously you've forgotten your place. Let me remind you..." he approached malovelently. Remania instinctually backed away, only to collide with the bouncer. "Sorry lass. His perogative to punish you if he feels like it." He spoke as he prevented her from fleeing. Aether pulled her tunic over her head, baring her back... Remania breathed in in anticipation.

It was over in just a few moments. But it felt like an eternity. Remania was lying curled into a ball on the ground. Aether briefly rinsed the whip from a nearby water fountain before hanging it back up on the tool rack. The bouncer stood watching from the sides till Aether returned inside. Then he filled a bowl from the same fountain. One had to admit plumbing was one of the great feats of dwarven engineering. And Remania couldn't be more thankful for it right now. "I... I'm sorry. Was In a bad mood. Didn't realize your master was such a right bastard."

He cleaned her wounds best he could. It was clear he was no healer. But it still felt like the touch of an angel to Remania. He wrapped some rags around her as makeshift bandages before sliding her tunic back on. "I think you could make an argument for cruel and unusual treatment to void your contract... After seeing all that. I'd be willing to help you contact someone that can represent you in that. Just tell me where you and your master are going next.

Remania remained lying on the ground. They were headed to the dwarven mountainhold of Tin peaks. Apparantly it was close to aether's home. And the last place he intended to try selling a few goods before returning to his people. She considered the bouncer. His shift in demeanour was quite sudden. But then, she had just been beaten so hard she blacked out from it while he watched. Could she perhaps trust him? She really couldn't say.

Dice rolls:
Constitution to endure aether's punishment:31. Far from enough to do anything but curl up and whimper. Even with a defiant mood
Sense motive: Impossible to tell what the dwarf's deal is in Remania's current heavily compromised state.

Remania told him. Of how Aether had strongarmed her into signing a slavery contract. How he had been dragging her along for days. How she just wanted to travel with him to the dwarven mountainhold.

The bouncer thought for a time. Then he put a hand on her shoulder. "So you're saying you came to our lands as a guest... That makes it all quite clear to me."

The bouncer spoke with determination in his eyes. Determination. And something that couldn't be mistaken for anything but the unyielding rage only dwarves could tap into. "Stay here. I'll go and have a word.

Remania didn't really have a choice in the matter. Her legs were too weak to carry her to safety even if she wanted to. The bouncer ran off. Some moments later, she could hear distant voices. Shouting. First one voice, and soon joined by several others. She saw Aether flying out the front door. He crawled to his feet and tried weaving a spell. Only to have it fizzle as he dodged out the way of a spinning throwing axe. He ran to the stables and glared at Remania. "What foul lies did you tell them!" He shouted as he got on the cart. The oxen had been left attached and ready to depart. Aether always wanted to be on the road as early as possible.

Remania could only glare back. "I told them the truth." She answered. Aether looked from her to the approaching band of dwarves. "You're still under contract." He spoke as he whipped at the oxen. The draft animals got moving with surprising speed. Scattering the angry mob as Remania's consciousness failed her.

She awoke in a warm bed that felt like it hugged her from all sides. Swaddled in proper bandages. A kindly dwarven woman was at her bedside. "Ah... You're awake dear. I'm sorry to say we couldn't track him down."

Remania sighed. He still had her bow and arrows on his cart. But he hadn't taken one thing from her." You found a small crystal in my boot?" She asked the woman. She nodded and motioned at the bedside dresser. "We could tell it belonged to you. One of the few maters dwarves and elves are aligned with is the power of these crystals... Take good care of it. I could hear it whisper of your home while you slept.

Remania turned on her back and breathed out in relief. She had a long time to ponder her next move.
