Merging duplicate tags in uploads / the gallery

Hi,

I edit / add tags to different uploads in the gallery for a while now, and there are some things that bother me.
One of them is the duplicate tags. For example, there is “comic”, "vore comic" and “comic vore” and there are many more, but most don't see much use.
Maybe in the long past they had a reason for existing separately, but today they don't really, I mean some still use “sequence” too...

I would be better from a user standpoint if they were merged into 1

Another point that could improve the archive / gallery part would be forcing upload to have a minimum of tags, at the very least describing the type of content (if it's an animation, a comic, a writing work, an advertisement). But that beside the main point of that post.

I see what you're going for. They gallery does have some merged tags (for example, "inside" and "internal") though it's best to be careful. Merging "comic" with "vore comic" could be bad if some of those comics were non-vore comics.

If there are tags you want to merge, you will just have to send me a PM for it. As another said, merging is challenging. So generally, we leave them alone. Having duplicates isn't a big deal.

It wouldn't be an issue if you could run searches with NOT conditions, and your blacklist was actually removed from results rather than just flagged. Then for example you could search for something that is any of oral vore, anal vore or unbirth, but not cock vore or non-vore. Something that was for example tagged both as oral vore and cock vore would be hidden from your search results.

I think a big annoyance for me is that when tags are more or less duplicates I sometimes go through a lot of search results for one, then realise another tag exists, then basically have to scroll through all the search results again when searching for the other tag or both tags at once.

You can actually do it. Let's say you like fatal vore and want to avoid reformation because you only enjoy it if the prey stays dead (I see that brought up pretty often). You can type "Fatal, -Reformation" to find pieces where the prey dies and is not reformed, and you can also add "-resurrection, -sentient fat, -soul vore" and other tags if you prefer for the prey not to keep existing in any form. (Of course, it's not gonna be perfect, especially for multi-chapter stories and comics which are tagged on a post-by-post basis, but in that case it's best to rely on the cover tags if the author provided them.)

Sounds like a version of auto-correct/auto-suggestion you get on the phone while typing is what is needed to keep the tag duplication down and help guide uploaders towards common tags.

I see it in the Search UI menu, in the tag field as a dropdown menu after you give it some letters. Is there something similar that shows when you tag your uploads?

How hard would it be to implement something like "related tags?" Maybe users could have some way to indicate when they think tags are similar/identical, and that logic could then be used in both searches and submissions. Some thoughts on how this could be used:

- After a user does a tag search, show a small banner at the top with "suggested similar tags". These could be ranked by how many times users tagged them as similar. Maybe they could even be clickable links that would add that tag to the current search.

- When uploading (or after uploading) show suggested/similar tags to the one the uploader added. It would be cool if this also had a way to provide feedback on which of the suggested tags were most popular too. Something like this might help guide uploaders towards using the most common tags for a given subject instead of the unusual ones.

- Tags that have enough "similar" votes from users could be sort of soft-merged on the backend. Tag searches could have a checkbox/option (maybe even on by default) to include related tags, and when enabled, searching for one tag would just automatically include tags that are above a certain "similar" threshold.

No idea who hard it would be to implement any of this of course...
