A beautiful and pretty accurate summary.

I've never understood people who really liked Rei (at least in the original series). She's the character equivilent of white bread and barely qualifies as having a personality. I can't see anything other than Asuka being the pred between the two making sense. Rei is just such a passive character that I can't really picture it, and Asuka is among the most dominant and animated characters in the whole show.
