Here's a new compilation clip of herons eating rodents. I wish they had showed the full swallow of the big muskrat at the end.

A new clip from wildirishswan from his normal filming spot. I am 99% sure this is new footage. A heron makes pretty quick work of a live duckling.

Also here is an Indian Pond Heron with a live fish in his gullet, working on swallowing it.

Dang, I'd love to have one as a pet, I'm sure it'd love the easy meals too!

This GBH has found a great fishing spot and puts away four decent sized live fish in under a minute!

Another gull downs a whole bird like it's nothing.

And another.

And another.

This one downs a... something.

This might be a fish, but it's really large.

Seagulls are both horrible and amazing at the same time. I watched on devour down a whole corndog someone dropped at the fair once, and I was so amazed, I have never forgotten it.
Watching them gulp down something squirming and wiggly alive makes it transcendent.
Thank you all so much for sharing these.

Of all the prey that herons like to eat, my favorite feedings to watch are the rodents such as voles. They're not slippery like fish, so it takes more effort on the bird's part to eat them. They go down alive just as often as fish do, and struggle at least as much as aquatic prey after the swallow. Here are a few clips that I don't think have been shared yet.

An unfortunate fish gets impaled, then swallowed alive.

Heron eats alligator. Unfortunately, you don't get to see the swallow in the video on the article.

Another large rodent goes down the gullet of a hungry heron. He's not near water, and the bulge in his neck remains for quite some time.

A very relaxing and satisfying egret feeding compilation set to music. All fish or eel prey, all swallowed alive.

A black-headed heron makes a quick meal out of a live mouse.

A duckling goes down the hatch.
